Located within the Georgetown Historic District, The Sheridan Garage is situated on the south side of Q Street, immediately west of Rock Creek Park and the Dumbarton Bridge. The building was constructed in 1922-23 for Henry R. Loveless and Carl A. Offutt at a cost of $25,000 (Washington, D.C. Permit to Build #4865, dated November 7, 1922). It was designed by local architect E. Burton Corning, a native Washingtonian. The garage was one of Corning’s earliest commissions and was followed by other notable works including the Chevy Chase Baptist Church, the B’nai B’rith National Headquarters Building, and a number of prominent apartment buildings in Northwest Washington, D.C.
The brick and concrete masonry building measures 55 feet wide by 161 feet deep and was originally intended to accommodate 57 automobiles. The garage is set back 50 feet from Q Street, reflecting a 1920 zoning ordinance governing the construction of commercial garages in residential areas. The Sheridan Garage was initially owned and operated by Loveless and Offutt, and continued to function as a garage until the 1940s.
Abandoned for many years, Keener-Squire Properties purchased the property in 2002 with the intent of converting it to a high-end condominium community. The award-winning architectural firm Shalom Baranes Associates designed the exterior plans, which included the addition of a third level to the original structure, and two new buildings, East Place and Courtyard, built on vacant land.
